No constraint is too great to dampen Cape Verdeans’ desire to ring in the New Year with happiness. Neighborhood dances are available on all islands for those who prefer to welcome 2015 on the dance floor. This year, most of the county’s municipal governments are also organizing free celebrations on beaches, town squares and streets. In Praia, city hall will hold a New Year’s concert on Gamboa beach, where local legends Ferro Gaita promise to turn the sand into a giant party. The concert will also feature music by Ceuzany, Eder Xavier, Manu Lima, René Cabral, Totinho, Lura, Gilyto and Élida Almeida. Before the live music begins, however, DJs LC Sabuja and André will spin the latest hits before handing the mics to funaná and pop artists Xibioti, Nani, Dany and Kimberly. At midnight, the sky in the capital city will light up with the traditional fireworks display. And, on January 1, a New Talents Festival will take place at the playground in Plateau for younger Praia residents.
On the island of São Vicente, the festivities begin shortly after midnight, following the traditional fireworks display and 12:00 am dip in the sea. Calcinha Preta, an electric forró-pop group from Brazil, will headline an open-air dance concerto n central Lisboa Street, after local bands Nova Ideia and Serenata perform.
In Santa Catarina, on the island of Santiago, city hall is organizing a fireworks display and concert in Assomada’s central square with the band Somaroots and other local groups.
Fireworks and traditional New Year’s carols with legendary maestro Paulino Vieira will ring in the New Year in Ribeira Brava, on the island of São Nicolau.
