Antunes has already left the helm of Académico do Sal and, according to sources from the Sal-based team, had been tapped by the Cape Verdean Soccer Federation as the new national coach even before leaving for Tunisia. Questioned regarding Antunes’ hiring, however, Cape Verdean Soccer Federation president Mário Semedo said that he would only talk about the future national soccer selection coach next week.
The transition to the new coach is expected to be smooth. In addition to having been the right-hand man of former coach João de Deus over the past several years, Lúcio Antunes is familiar with the terrain, as he has been coaching the under-21 selection since 2007. Indeed, he conquered the gold medal in under-21 soccer at the 2009 Lusophone Games in Lisbon.
Before the first game in the African Cup of Nations qualification tournament against Mali, the new coach is expected to lead the Cape Verdean national selection in an exhibition game against Senegal in Dakar.
