National Water and Sanitation Plan approved 12 Janeiro 2015

The government has approved the National Water and Sanitation Strategic Plan (known by the Portuguese-language acronym PLENAS), in an initiative that includes ensuring all citizens’ right to water and promoting the integrated improvement of the conditions in which it is supplied, as well as of general sanitation conditions, safeguarding the sustainable use of natural resources and of the environment.

National Water and Sanitation Plan approved

“The National Water and Sanitation Strategic Plan establishes, for example, the target of access to a minimum of 40 liters of water per person per day, and the discouragement of consumption of more than 90 liters of water per person per day, as well as the reduction of the distance those without home water hookups must travel to obtain water to less than 10 minutes,” explained Council of Ministers spokesman Démis Lobo.

The plan also aims to allow water prices to reach a level at which they will no longer constitute a limiting factor for those in less favorable socio-economic conditions.

“Its implementation is to be the object of a monitoring and assessment process, allowing for the collecting of the information necessary for the PLENAS to be periodically updated,” said Lobo.

The National Water and Sanitation Strategic Plan was approved in the last meeting of the Council of Ministers on Thursday, January 8.
