Electrical energy has been guaranteed since Wednesday, according to Health Department delegate Ana Paula Santos. Beginning at 2:00 pm today, the 16 patients housed at the Health Department delegation will be transferred to the hospital.
The new Sal Hospital, long a dream of the island’s residents, will feature a total of ten physicians and offer services in the areas of general medicine, surgery, obstetrics, gynecology, pediatrics, clinical pathology and radiology.
Located on the road that connects the city of Espargos to the village of Pedra de Lume, the hospital building took nearly four years to be completed. The hospital covers the islands of Boa Vista and São Nicolau in addition to Sal itself. With a 40-bed capacity, the hospital was built based on a budget of 345 million escudos, including equipment, financed by the Regional Fund for Development. The Sal Health Department delegate was eager to see the opening of the new hospital; indeed, according to Santos, “serving the population of Sal in a modern infrastructure such as this is the fulfillment of a dream of every doctor, but also of every inhabitant of this island, who have long hoped fir a health facility worthy of the island.”
Ana Paula Santos made a point, however, of stressing that some adjustments may be necessary during the transfer phase, but believes that with the help of citizens and patients themselves, the Health Department will be able to compensate any faults and provide the best possible services to the population.
