PAICV legislator Euclides de Pina criticized the way the Inquiry Commission chairwoman presented the report, affirming that the main cause of the accident in question was the dangerous maneuver executed by the ship’s captain.

Pina said that the government had nothing to do with the Vicente’s sinking. “There are half-truths in the Parliamentary Inquiry Commission report, which was approved by the MpD legislators,” he affirmed.

The PAICV disagrees with all of the positions presented by the Commission chairwoman, and Euclides de Pina affirmed that the main cause of the disaster was the dangerous maneuver ordered by the ship’s captain and not excessive cargo. In this regard, the PAICV believes that the ship owner should be held responsible for the human and material losses, given that the main cause of the accident was error on the part of the captain.

“If the ship has been overloaded, it would have sunk before getting to Fogo. With the declarations legislator Eunice Silva made in the newspaper Expresso das Ilhas, she’s doing a disservice to the parliament, to her party and to the country,” he affirmed.

The Vicente sank off the coast of Fogo on January 8 with 26 people on board, only 11 of whom survived.
