Wânia Monteiro competes in Olympics on Friday 20 August 2008
Wânia Monteiro will participate in her first competition at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games this Friday, August 22. The Cape Verdean gymnast will participate in one of the day’s three artistic gymnastics qualification rounds. Monteiro, who sent a message in Portuguese to the A Semana Online readers’ forum yesterday, gave her encouragement to Cape Verdean paralympic athlete Artemisa and said she and her coach were thrilled at being in Beijing. “The village is lovely and the Chinese hosts are very welcoming,” she affirmed.
Nelson Cruz, for his part, will only enter into the scene on Sunday, August 24, when the Olympic marathon winds through the streets of Beijing.
Wânia Monteiro, who has become a priminent gymnast in Africa, and Nelson Cruz, who won a gold medal in the 2006 Lusophone Games in Macau, were originally supposed to be accompanied by runner Lenira Santos, who was unable to attend the games due to an injury.
The Cape Verdean delegation also includes two young observers, Jerry Neves (judo) and Joseane Barros (rhythmic gymnastics).
