Hillary Clinton expressed her hope that Cape Verde may serve as inspiration to other governments for women to occupy more decision-making positions. Indeed, the empowerment of African women was one of the many reasons behind the US Secretary of State’s trip to Africa.
In the press conference she gave Friday morning on the island of Sal alongside Prime Minister José Maria Neves, the American government official stressed the fact that her short visit to Cape Verde was intended to prove to other African countries that the Obama administration believes in good governance. “Look at Cape Verde and see what is an example of good governance, effort at economic growth, respect for human rights and work for the improvement of the population’s quality of living,” she said.
Greater security in the Atlantic
The United States Secretary of State promised to work alongside Cape Verde and other countries to improve security in the Atlantic Ocean and to combat drug, arms and human trafficking. She highlighted the cooperation that exists between the United States and Cape Verde in the realm of police training, with the assistance of the FBI and the introduction of new equipment, and guaranteed that the United States government is willing to continue helping Cape Verde in the fight against organized crime. A strategic outline must be drawn up, however, in order to reach these objectives, affirmed Hilary Clinton.
Hillary Clinton also affirmed that Cape Verde was the only country of the seven she visited on her African trip that showed more positive points than negative ones. But Clinton’s enchantment with the islands was not limited to its domestic and foreign policy.
The US Secretary of State also said she was struck by the beauty of Cape Verde’s landscape and by the warmth of its people. And when invited by journalist Moisés Évora to return to Cape Verde, Clinton, who returned to Cape Verde Friday afternoon on board a US Air Force Boeing 757, promised to return with her husband to enjoy the country at greater length and under less formal circumstances.
