Dust from Mauritania results in flight cancellations in Cape Verde 24 November 2009

Cape Verde is currently under the influence of a zone-specific anti-cyclone flow that is favoring the transportation of dust from the coast of Mauritania to the archipelago. The phenomenon, known in Cape Verde as “dry haze,” has led TACV Cabo Verde Airlines to cancel flights from the island of Sal to other islands.

According to the National Meteorology and Geophysics Institute, visibility is reduced or poor on practically all of Cape Verde’s islands, ranging between 2,000 and 5,000 meters. The situation is expected to continue for the next several hours, according to information gathered by A Semana Online.

On Monday, November 23, TACV Cabo Verde Airlines cancelled inter-island flights between Sal and São Nicolau and Sal and São Vicente because of the lack of visibility, and more cancellations are possible today.

Meanwhile, the seas in the archipelago are rough, and the National Meteorology and Geophysics Institute has advised fishermen not to stray far from the coast or, preferably, not to go out to sea.
