Cape Verdean accused of two bank robberies in US 06 February 2010

24-year-old Cape Verdean Sérgio Duarte, a resident of the city of Pawtucket, Rhode Island (USA), was accused this week of robbing two banks and two pizzerias.

According to local authorities, Duarte was arrested by Pawtucket city police following an attempted robbery at Woodlawn Credit Union, located on Main Street in the Rhode Island city. The bank is known among the sizable local Cape Verdean community as the “Cape Verdean Bank” due to the large number of customers hailing from the archipelago.

Investigators told news website visaonews that Sérgio Duarte made his way to a bank teller and demanded “cash” using a handwritten note he gave to an employee. He apparently left the bank before receiving the money.

Local police also believe that Duarte committed several other robberies, including one on January 27 at Citizens Bank on East Avenue, on January 22 at Roman’s Pizza, and on January 23 at the Pizza Den.

The suspect was heard Wednesday at Providence District Court and was ordered held without bail regarding the Woodlawn Credit Union case. His bail was set at US$ 25,000 for the other three cases.
