Presidential candidates give it their all in the last day of campaigning in Praia 05 August 2011
The four candidates in Sunday’s presidential election, Aristides Lima, Jorge Carlos Fonseca, Manuel Inocêncio Sousa and Joaquim Jaime Monteiro, have all chosen the city of Praia to wrap up their respective campaigns. The contenders are expected to do all they can to win the support of undecided voters in the city’s capital, who will play a decisive role in choosing the next President of the Republic of Cape Verde.
Aristides Lima will hold a rally in front of Várzea Stadium to close his campaign. After 15 days traveling throughout the country, the self-styled “candidate of the citizenry” will bring together the heavyweights among his supporters, including Felisberto Vieira, Júlio Correia and Sidónio Monteiro, for a final appeal to voters in the nation’s capital. Among those providing entertainment at the rally will be Jorge Neto, Zé Espanhol, Meno Petcha and a batuko group.
Approximately one kilometer away, next to the Sucupira market, Manuel Inocêncio Sousa will wrap up his campaign. In addition to the candidate himself, Prime Minister and PAICV chairman José Maria Neves will, alongside Rui Semedo, be one of the main speakers of the evening in the final round of vote-gathering prior to Sunday’s election. Entertainment will be provided by Beto Dias, Jay, Azaiaz, Albertino and Cordas do Sol.
Jorge Carlos Fonseca will hold his final campaign rally nearby, in the Praia district of Fazenda. The event will feature the presence of several heavyweights from opposition party MpD, including party chairman Carlos Veiga, Praia mayor Ulisses Correia e Silva, Fernando Elísio Freire and José Filomeno, as well as legislators, campaign directors and members of Fonseca’s commission of honor.
The “people’s candidate,” Joaquim Jaime Monteiro, will carry out his final campaign event with person-to-person contacts in various neighborhoods in Praia.
