São Francisco de Assis Hospital becomes Fogo-Brava Regional Hospital 01 March 2012
The São Francisco de Assis Socio-Health Center, owned by the Solidarity for Development Association (ASDE) on the island of Fogo, will, beginning today, become the Fogo-Brava Regional Hospital, following remodeling and the acquisition of new equipment, according to an announcement from Minister of Health Cristina Fontes Lima.
The protocol for the donation of the São Francisco de Assis Socio-Health Center’s facilities to the State of Cape Verde will be signed today, March 1, between ASDE president Father Octávio Fassano and Minister of Health Cristina Fontes Lima in an event to be attended by Prime Minister José Maria Neves. The project for the remodeling of the building and the acquisition of equipment for the future regional hospital’s pediatrics and maternity wards will involve investments of some five million Euros, according to Fontes Lima.
An Austrian delegation is currently on Fogo to assess the costs of the remodeling and expansion project. Financing for the work, which is expected to get started in June or July, as well as for the equipment, is guaranteed by the Austrian Fund.
In the Health Minister’s view, the construction of the regional hospital “constitutes an important step forward for the health sector on the two islands” of Fogo and Brava. The cabinet minister also said that the structuring of the regional hospital will assist in the creation of the Fogo-Brava health region.
Cristina Fontes Lima explained that the current hospital will be transformed into a health center after the move to the new installations.
With the donation, the State of Cape Verde assumes responsibility for all of the staff, workers and medical personnel at the São Francisco de Assis Center, who will become employees of the Ministry of Health.
