Fatal accident on new Ribeira da Torre road 11 March 2012
32-year-old Alberto Carlos Monteiro, better known as Calú d’António de Batcha, died in the early morning hours of Sunday, March 11, after being hit by a pickup truck on the newly-opened Ribeira da Torre road in Ribeira Grande, on the island of Santo Antão.
While returning home with a group of friends after attending a beauty pageant in the city of Ribeira Grande, Monteiro was hit by a pickup truck at approximately 6:00 am in the Penoso/Lugar de Guene zone of Ribeira da Torre valley. He died immediately.
According to physician Alexandre Lizardo Alves at João Morais Regional Hospital in Ribeira Grande, Monteiro’s skull was crushed in the accident, and various fractures were seen in his upper limbs.
Ribeira Grande National Police chief José Martins said that little could yet be affirmed regarding the accident, but said that the driver of the pickup truck, Jobel Pires, had stated that he had given a ride to a number of friends residing in Lugar de Guene at approximately 5:00 am Sunday after they left the S’rra Negra disco.
When returning, the driver saw a group of youths, one of whom gestured to him with his arms in the air. In his attempt to understand the meaning of the gesture, his vehicle ran over Monteiro, who was lying in his lane of the road. “What concerns me most is that when I asked them for help, they all ran away. I panicked and turned myself in at the National Police squadron,” concludes 25-year-old driver.
