Cape Verdeans star in police reality show in US 11 March 2013

Manny Canuto and Diamantino “D” Araújo are Cape Verdeans and members of the Boston Police Department’s Gang Unit. Now, every Wednesday on cable television channel TNT, which has in the past produced hit shows like Law & Order, ER and Castle, they are the co-starts of Boston’s Finest. In this reality show, directed by actor Donnie Wahlberg, the work of the Boston Police Department agents shows viewers what it takes to protect and serve the most populous city in the state of Massachusetts.

Boston’s Finest premiered on February 27 and had audiences enthralled by its second episode. This, in part, is because the reality show does not limit itself to following the BPD officers while they’re on duty – it also reveals their personal lives, presenting spectators with a look into their family lives.

The unit, which is officially called the Youth Violence Strike Force, includes Cape Verdeans Manny Canuto and Diamantino “D” Araújo who, alongside 64 other officers, detectives and supervisors, work in partnership with the Department of Justice to reduce the violence perpetrated by gangs and combat the illegal possession of arms, keeping criminals and youth offenders off the streets.

To see the third episode of the reality show, which goes on the airo n Wednesday, March 13, the Cape Verdean community in Boston has scheduled a gathering at Cesaria’s Restaurant in the city. Canuto and Araújo will also be there, and Donnie Wahlberg, who grew up in Boston’s Dorchester district, itself home to a large Cape Verdean community, is also expected to be on hand at Cesaria’s to share his experience producing the eight-installment series with the public.

In an interview with the local press, the director said that the officers chosen to star in Boston’s Finest are just a “good slice” of the thousands of men and women who work at the Boston Police Department. The short biography of Manny Canuto posted on the reality show’s site says that the 32-year-old officer has been working in the gang unit for 11 years. Manny, who is single, grew up and continues to live in the Boston neighborhood of Roxbury, where a sizeable Cape Verdean community is based. His parents also live in the district.

33year-old Diamantino “D” Araújo also lives in Roxbury, where he moved when he was ten years old after emigrating from his native Cape Verde. Araújo, who has been working in the Gang Unit for seven years, is Canuto’s “best friend and partner,” and is married with two children.
