According to Katia Delimbeuf, the author of an article published in Portuguese weekly Expresso on the seven wonders of the Atlantic, the nesting of sea turtles on the islands of Maio, Sal, Boa Vista and Santiago is among the Atlantic Ocean’s most fascinating natural phenomena.
A total of 42 turtles hatched Thursday while children watched on António de Sousa beach in Santa Maria, Sal, where the organization SOS Tartarugas and the Sal municipal chamber had encircled an area of sand containing 18 nests and a total of 1,593 eggs. Another 36 had hatched the previous Monday.
According to the international scientific community, Cape Verde’s seas are home to some 658 species of fish, 13 of which are endemic. It’s only natural that we almost always refer to fish when the subject is marine life, but there is much more to marine life in Cape Verde than just fish.
