According to Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã, Judiciary Police in the city of Setúbal arrested three individuals last week suspected of belonging to a criminal network that introduced large quantities of controlled substances into Pinheiro da Cruz prison on Grândola.
One of the three is a Cape Verdean man residing illegally in Portugal. The 43-year-old man has a previous conviction on drug trafficking charges and was out on parole at the time of his arrest.
According to police, the Cape Verdean and a 44-year-old Portuguese woman would give the drugs to a prison guard, the ring’s alleged leader. The 45-year-old guard took advantage of his position at the prison to smuggle drugs into the establishment.
The Judiciary Police arrested the three suspects in possession of enough heroin for some 800 doses. In addition to the drugs, authorities also seized two vehicles, three mobile phones and bank documents allegedly related to the trafficking activities.
