The Cape Verdean Basketball Federation has publicly stated that its objective is to improve upon the bronze medal Cape Verde brought home from the last edition of Afrobasket, which took place in 2007 in Angola. At the time, Cape Verde’s national basketball team was coached by Emanuel Trovoada.
The roster has been remodeled, and among its reinforcements is Jefferson Xavier, considered an influential part on the current team and one of those responsible for much of Cape Verde’s success in the 2nd edition of the Lusophone Games, in which Cape Verde grabbed the silver medal in the sport.
Cape Verde’s first game in Afrobasket 2009 is scheduled for August 5 against Tunisia. Cape Verde is part of group D, which also includes Morocco and Rwanda.
