Cape Verdean sentenced for extortion of illegal immigrants in Spain 20 Julho 2009

Cape Verdean Joaquim Borges has been sentenced to one year in prison by a Spanish court for having swindled illegal immigrants from the African continent.

According to website visaonews, Borges is the owner of a small civil construction company in Spain, and accepted more than €4,200 from four undocumented African workers with the promise that he would help them legalize their situation in Spain.

In addition to the one-year prison sentence, the court in the province of Zaragoza, where Borges was tried, ordered the Cape Verdean to return the money he took from the immigrants. A Senegalese national, Bourama M., was also cited in the trial as having served as an accomplice to Borges.

The judge classified the crime as grave, in that it involved extortion against individuals in extremely vulnerable situations.
