Cape Verdean student shot by police in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) 12 Julho 2009

Waldir Monteiro, a Cape Verdean student attending university in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was shot five times on the afternoon of July 1 by a police officer who mistook him for a drug trafficker.

Waldir Monteiro was returning home from class on a motorcycle-taxi when he was shot five times by a police officer.

The information systems student, who says he has no connection with the world of crime, was handcuffed and taken to a local hospital, where he was treated. Fortunately, he managed to survive.

The driver of the motorcycle-taxi, however, a 17-year-old Brazilian, was not so lucky, and died after being hit in the stomach with one of the bullets. According to an A Semana Online source, police are attempting to cover up the incident.
