João “Jota” Cardoso, former president of the Batuque soccer club, remembers Di as an “excellent and humble” person.
Di played for Derby in 2001, the year the team was consecrated Cape Verdean national champion, and for Batuque in 2002/2003, when it was champion.
Di had been in Lisbon, Portugal for two years, receiving treatment for leukemia, but failed to resist a bone marrow transplant, despite having initially shown some improvement. His mortal remains arrived early this morning on the island of Sal, and were immediately sent to São Vicente.
The funeral of the athlete, who is survived by a five-year-old son, took place today in Mindelo.
