Former RDC rebel leader had €1.7 million deposited in Cape Verde 30 Julho 2009

Former rebel leader and Democratic Republic of Congo vice-president Jean-Pierre Bemba had € 1.7 million deposited in the Cape Verdean off-shore subsidiary of Portuguese bank BPN. The discovery of the deposit was made during a freezing of Bemba’s assets ordered by the International Criminal Court.

Portuguese newspaper Público reports that in addition to his account in Cape Verde, authorities located two other accounts at BPN used by Bemba to pay for expenses in Portugal. Jean-Pierre Bemba, who is also the leader of the Movement for the Liberation of the Congo, is under arrest by the International Criminal Court on accusations of having committed crimes against humanity and five counts of war crimes.
