Last director of Tarrafal prison releases memoires 26 Abril 2009

86-year-old Educardo Vieira Fortes, better known as Dadinho, was the last director of the Tarrafal Prison Camp, and will soon release a book recounting his experiences at the prison, where, at the time of the Portuguese revolution in 1974, 51 Angolan and Cape Verdean political prisoners were detained.

The news comes from Portuguese news weekly Expresso, which will in its next edition include comments by José Pedro Castanheira on the book by the prison’s last director.

Eduardo Vieira Fontes has been living in the state of Rhode Island, in the United States, since 1974, with his wife and six children. The “former overseas administration employee has kept his Portuguese nationality and also became a naturalized US citizen. He never returned to Cape Verde,” writes the Expresso.
