Ministry of Culture expresses consternation at death of Lela Violão 07 Maio 2009

Cape Verde’s Ministry of Culture has expressed its condolences and consternation to the family of musician and composer Manuel Tomás da Cruz, better known as Lela Violão, who passed away yesterday at the age of 80.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Culture, “the death of this cultivator of Cape Verdean music, who exhibited his own particular style of playing and was considered a virtuoso on the guitar, is a painful loss for Cape Verdean culture.

“A humble and humanistic individual with a big heart, Lela Violão worked on various fronts, on almost all of Cape Verde’s islands, having nevertheless dedicated all of his free time to music, which he learned at eight years of age. His CD Caldo de Rabeca is testament to this very fact.

“A carpenter by profession, Lela Violão worked until he was eighty, an age he reached in January of this year, and it is the duty of the Ministry of Culture to highlight this illustrious name in the Cape Verdean musical panorama, acknowledging his talent and his valuable contribution to the enrichment of Cape Verdean music and culture.”
