UN gives the go-ahead for African Union to investigate assassination of Nino Vieira 22 Julho 2009

The African Union and the Economic Community of West African States will investigate the assassinations of Guinea Bissauan president João Bernardo “Nino” Vieira and Armed Forces chief-of-staff Tagma na Waie, both of whom were killed in March of this year.

According to Guinea Bissau’s interim president, Raimudo Pereira, the United Nations has given the go-ahead for the AU and the ECOWAS to investigate the assassinations of Vieira and Waie. Pereira spoke at Bissau airport upon returning from the 15th Summit of Non-Aligned Countries, which took place in the Egyptian city of Charm-el-Cheik.

“The United Nations has instructed the African Union and the ECOWAS to create an inquiry commission to determine the circumstances that led to the assassinations of President João Bernardo Vieira and General Tagma na Waie,” affirmed Pereira.
